Peer Steinbrück is a German politician with the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD). He was the party’s chancellor-candidate in the 2013 federal election[.
Steinbrück served as the 8th Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2002 to 2005, a member of the Bundestag from 2009 to 2016. Steinbrück has always been a prominent speaker for the SPD, especially on economic matters and he subsequently became Federal Minister of Finance in the first Cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merkel from 2005 to 2009. Having lost the election in 2013, he announced his withdrawal from his high political offices but remained a member of the Bundestag. After the death of former chancellor Helmut Schmidt and after playing a major role in establishing the Helmut Schmidt Foundation, Steinbrück decided to leave the Bundestag in 2016. Today, he serves on the Board of Trustees of the Helmut Schmidt foundation and works as a business consultant.
